Hi - I'm an American backpacker who has fallen in love with everything Wellington (or, more broadly, everything Kiwi). What an extraordinary city of hidden adventures... Dear Wellington

You rained for four months when I first arrived, pausing only to breathe before crying another bucketful.

Then, when it was me who was crying, you changed the backdrop to bright sunny days - fresh from the wash. 

I took refuge in your night, when you stole the stars from the sky to decorate your tall buildings in a forest of christmas trees. 

Under the street lamps I fed pigeons and listened to "Grenada."  

I guess a city can have a soul, maybe made up from all the souls within it, because I never felt alone.

Dear Wellington,
You were absolutely the right town for me when I left Taranaki as an 18 year old and came to live in your exciting, vibrant city - you embraced diversity. I found true friends and comrades we protested and worked and partied and felt part of the changes sweeping NZ in the 1970s. You can think in this town, you can find fellow travelers, you can love and eat and be entertain[ed] and work and dance and be nurtured by the creative land that is Whanganui-a-tara. THANKS xxxx

We have an unstoppable bond. I try to move but you pull me back.

I say this is the last winter but it never is. I say I want a warmer summer but never leave.

I am blessed to be a New Zealander with Ukrainian heritage. To call Wellington home is a privilege. I was totally yours from my first visit age 17 for the Shakespeare festival. Since then we've laughed, cried, danced and grown together. Stay true to your horizon line.

Hero of the day

I am a total stranger to the city. I'm insecure, curious and clumsy. But whenever I feel I need help I receive it generously from the people in Wellington. I'm about to have a collection of "hero of the day" stories during my 120 days staying here.

There is loads to do and see! And almost everything is free! It's amazing here!

Sometimes when it's been raining for weeks on end & there's a gale blowing I wonder what makes me stay here. But then the sun comes out & the wind stops & i fall in love with you all over again.
This is the city where I studied, got an amazing job, & made so many awesome friends.
You will forever be in my heart & I look forward to more of those sunny days!
