We’re asking visitors to write and leave love letters to Wellington in the Te Upoko o te Ika a Māui exhibition at the Museum of Wellington City & Sea. The exhibition features people's stories and passion about the greater Wellington region. One letter per day is selected to add to this blog. We welcome and encourage conversation and feedback to each letter.

The best thing in Wellington...
My name is Lacklan. I am 5 y.o. from Adelaide, Australia. So far the best thing in Wellington was the dangerous goods exhibit at Te Papa and the chocolate milkshake at Fidels on Cuba St. I also liked the bucket fountain on Cuba Street.

The right feel
My partner and I moved up to Wellington from Nelson in January 2012. Our little boy was born here in Oct 2012. Wellington has the right feel to it for us and we enjoy it here. Plenty to do. We love it.

6 months before it sank
Great to come back to Wellington. I traveled here last in Nov 1967. I was on the Wahine mid Nov 1967, 6 months before it sank. Seeing the film today was very moving. Thank you.

Basking in the sun
Hi! This is my story - I saw a seal on the waterfront in Wellington. He was laying about on the rocks, basking in the sun. Yay seal!

The good old days
Hi, I live at Paraparaumu Beach. Wellington has gone from Stone Age to the Digital Age. But, Kirks is still here, and this building, this says something for the good old days! From Pru.

An untamed beauty
Yes there is wind, yes there are earthquakes, but nothing compares to the forces at the heart. Wellington, I love you, you are wild, you are free. yours is an untamed beauty, stay that way, don't ever change. Forever yours...

Entertaining the crowds
Me (Celia Derby) is [sic] coming today to hear my brother (Mark Derby's) lecture. Also, I played keyboards in the band ("The Roadsters") at the Overseas Terminal for weddings. I now play piano at the Hope Centre.

My parents bet us to it
Almost 9 years ago I met a gorgeous Kiwi in Bristol, UK. 2 1/2 years ago, we married and we're now visiting all the places he lived and grew up in New Zealand. By strange coincidence, my mum and dad now find themselves living in Wellington (cheap accommodation for us!). We [love] it here and want to stay!
This is our baby! How nice is this.

11 exchanges and still going strong
I am a teacher from Melbourne. We are on a school exchange with Kena Kena School in Paraparaumu. This is the 11th year of the exchange. This year we brought 20 students. They sent 18 earlier in the year. Kids are billeted with buddies.

Bittersweet
Wellington, and this area brings a mixed, perhaps bittersweet, memories. I met and courted the love of my life here. She was a Wellingtonian, and I, a salty brown tanned/burnt islander. After our studies of 4 years at Vic [university], we parted ways with promises to reunite here at the Museum (Te Papa) while staying in touch via email. On the eve of our reunion, she was working late in Chch [Christchurch], and died in the earthquake that morning.

Aussie and kiwi banter
My husband and self are visiting from Australia (we are on our 1st cruise). We have many kiwi friends and love to tease each other. We loved reading [in the Museum] the bit about those who leave your shores to do well in Australia - we claim as our own. Too true!!

A small small world
Ttravelling around the world you realise how small it really is, and big at the same time. First cafe I enter in Wellington and I am greeted by the familiar scouse accent from back home in Liverpool, England. Turned out we knew some of the same people, on the other side of the world.

Sailing to Wellington
I sailed to Wellington from Auckland on Australia's National Sail Training Ship, the Young Endeavour. With no more than a week's experience, 20 youthies [sic] (aged 18 - 24) managed to successfully navigate and sail the tall sailing ship from Queen Charlotte Sound to Wellington during a 44 hour period.

Readying for the wind!
Leaving Auckland at a 6am flight, on a windy, cold & rainy day, people next to me on the plane told me a way to get ready for Wellington. When the plan landed it was blue sky, sunny, no wind - a perfect spring day - and a surprise!

Up on top of the hills
Hi! I am a student from Hong Kong. This is my first time in New Zealand! I have found the people of Wellington extremely friendly and caring. The best part of my visit so far is watching the fireworks from Wright's Hill and visiting Brooklyn's wind turbine, which was just amazing.

A place of action
Near the water by the boathouse there is a quote that refers to Wellington being a place of action, the home of the verb. Since arriving in Wellington from Canada I have learned how true that is. You cannot have a passive existence here; you have to embrace adventure and the constant adrenaline rushes to do something. Thanks Wellington for making me explore and push my boundaries as I try to settle in this beautiful country.

Ditching school for parades
I grew up in Wellington and I remember Mum pulling us out of school (Discovery Primary in Whitby) whenever there were big parades. My first was the ticket tape celebration for the America's Cup and seeing Peter Blake with his moustache in the flesh. I was so in awe of the whole sight and loved the tape floating down on the city like snow.

Weka calling
Last Christmas my brother from the South Island came to stay with us in Karori. He couldn't believe he heard weka's [sic] calling to each other in the night. We are so lucky in Wellington to have the wild life we do so close.

Windy Wellington is better than sunny Wellington?
Whenever the sun shines, I always miss the cold rainy days. Windy Wellington is better than sunny Wellington.

Stars and movies
I went to the Carter Observatory on the 19th October and looked at the stars. I looked threw [sic] a huge telescope. The first star I saw was Venus. It was a star with a purple and orange background. I also saw a movie that told me about space and told me how to find the Southern Cross.

'Too dangerous' they said - but oh! What fun.
I remember clearly as a child riding on the last day of the old Cable Car. Sideways perched on the outside steps - 'too dangerous' they said - but oh! What fun. The Friday night trip down to Bakehouse Arcade on Lambton Quay never to be the same again!

Angry birds
We met an 'angry bird' in Zealandia! Fat, round, with colourful feathers! Angry Bird 'Juicy'. And there are a lot of cute lambs everywhere in the countryside. And near the lakes, so many baby ducks. And some dinosaurs.

Not wimps after all
Hello, I'm Rio. I am 10 years old and I've lived in Germany for 5 years and came back again. When I got back to my old school, the kids there talked about the earthquakes they experienced. I thought they were wimps. That was until I experienced my very first one.

A kiwi experience
We are from Puhoi & came down to visit family who took us to the Wellington Zoo. Fantastic, you feel like you could touch the kiwis as unlike most zoos in NZ when visiting the kiwi enclosure. There is no glass barriers. Go see for yourself. It's fabulous!

If it's not shaking it's blowing
UK girl in a Wellington world. If it's not shaking it's blowing? The first big earthquake was the worst. Being trapped in a car-park watching everything around me shake. Expecting the buildings to cave in. But it's just normal life now. Along with adapting to your surroundings. I constantly carry around a hair bobble + rain/wind jacket.
