A Single Candle...

A single candle can [light] a thousand candles and its life won't be shortened. Happiness never decreases when shared. This museum is a candle.

Childhood in Russia

In my childhood in Russia, New Zealand was a place at the end of the world. Even in my dreams I never thought and [imagined] I will be here. Wow!

Fishing Tragedy

I do not know the date, but it would be over 100 years ago now. Some members of my great-grandparents' family went fishing off Island Bay. In view of other family members, their boat disappointed [disappeared]. The boat and the people on board were never seen again.

Young, Growing, Evolving

I drove south from Auckland with my beautiful wife to attend a conference at Victoria University. As we entered Wellington I was struck by the peaceful beauty of the city. I walked the city with another family yesterday and heard a bit about the history. Such a young country. Growing. Evolving. Living together. Simple pleasures of good coffee & conversation. How can I join this place? Only 2 more weeks to share.

Hanging Masonry

My family and I have been to Wellington many times and enjoy the waterfront so much. We are from Christchurch so the hanging masonry freaks us out a little bit.

Came for Lord of the Ringss

I'm from France and came here because of the Lord of the Rings but what a lovely city, even with the wind! I almost did everything there is to do and I will go back home with a lot of memories! Love Wellington & New Zealand.

Will Return Without Children

I want to learn lots about NZ but my children don't allow me to concentrate. I will therefore be back one day to explore and read and perhaps live. They can come and visit.

Sofa at the Beach

It's not that windy today, it's actually very hot & everyone is out & about the harbour front & at the beach. We even saw some people bring their sofa to the beach - what an idea! Michelle, from Kent, England.

Making Cashew Nut Butter

Dancing in the Rain

I'm from Canada and have spent the last 3 days exploring Wellington, and I've decided I may just live here forever. Wellington is one of a kind. I love the vibes of this city and the people and the cafes and the streets. I will forever remember my first night in Wellington dancing down the streets in the rain, knowing I'd finally found a city I hope to one day call home.

Broken Cable Car!

Cable Car was broken! Despite this unexpected situation the whole trip was a pleasant one. 12-hour journey by train offered a different way to see New Zealand. Green land, green land, and more green land! I <3 how people dress in Wellington!

End of the Earth

We moved here from Perth in Scotland 3 years ago for work. We love how easy Wellington is to get around (even traffic is great compared to Perth) and how different the various parts of the city can be (hilly to rugged coast in 20 mins). Love standing watching the seals at Red Rocks feeling like you are at the end of the Earth, till a plane flies into land and you remember the CBD and parliament are only about 10 mins away as the crow flies.

Country Kid

 

I am from Murchison. I am over here on a school trip with my class and I don't like Wellington. It's too big, I like the country better :) I am 14 and turning 15 very soon.

Windy, Smelly, and Yummy

Wellington is windy! It's yummy. It smells like the sea. That's if you are near the sea. I like the shops!

The Secret Museum

I have a long history with Wellington and indeed the City and Sea Museum. I work as a nanny and every school holidays I'll take them to the 'secret museum'. I never get over the look on their faces when the taniwha's eye appears on the roof of that second floor exhibition.

Love Being a Wellington Family!

We are in Wellington for 2 years. We are visiting from the UK. We think it is a fabulous city. It is well cared for and seems to care for it's residents. The libraries, swimming pools, play areas, reserves, beaches and of course museums are fantastic resources. We have loved being a Wellington family. Thanks for having us!

First of the Season

Together After 11 Months

My husband got a job in Wellington a couple of years ago and he had to go ahead of the family - so we were apart for 11 months except for 1 week (valentine's week 2012) when I came to see him and he took me to Wellington Zoo as a Valentine's present, to have a close encounter with a cheetah. We are all here now (+ our 5 children) and I work at the zoo as a volunteer. I love it!

A Feature of Wellington, But

Today was very windy. I know strong wind is one of the features of Wellington. But today's wind was extraordinary strong. That's why I came [to] this museum to have a seat.

Digging out the milkworms

When I was a kid in the 70's my dad used to play tricks on us. One of his favourites was digging out milkworms (huge foul worms over a metre long and as thick as your finger) from the clay of the hill behind our house. He would the[n] shout 'surprise!' and throw them at our faces. It was terrifying and hilarious at once.

It [Wellington] may be windy but it's warmer than Scotland.

A round trip

60's. Brought up in Khandallah - as a youngster, use to walk with M+D plus brother + sister down Madras St along to Jubalee Rd and down the trk [track] to the main road where we walked to the Wellington railway station and rested with a hot pie/pud (potatoes) + peas, then got the train back to Khandallah and back up Madras St. Often used this way to get Part Time work in Wellington (Hallensteins) on Lambton Quay or visit my grandfather who had an office on Cable Car Lane - fond memories.
 

Passing on the memories

We moved into our first house in Wellington in 2011. That year Wellington had it's first proper snowstorm for over 30 years. We took lots of photos of the house and garden and sent them to the previous owners who now live in Auckland. They had lived in Wellington for 40 years, so the pictures brought back lots of memories.

RNZAF at Shelly Bay

The first time I lived in Wellington was when I was working out at RNZAF Base, Shelly Bay. The ? in being out in the 'burbs' was getting to live and work on the harbour's edge in a 'village-like' community. I remember when the Kahawai would run close to shore, the MT guys could throw their fishinglines out & take their chances - where else!
