We’re asking visitors to write and leave love letters to Wellington in the Te Upoko o te Ika a Māui exhibition at the Museum of Wellington City & Sea. The exhibition features people's stories and passion about the greater Wellington region. One letter per day is selected to add to this blog. We welcome and encourage conversation and feedback to each letter.

"I'll be back!"
Kia ora,
Thomas Bissett is my name. From the UK and currently working in Auckland. I'm down in Wellington for a chilled out weekend away and have fallen in love with the city. The views from Mt Vic summit are just something else, and with the endless good vibes [emanating] from the cafes and bars, I now see why Aucklanders rave about Wellington. Had a great time, and in the words of Arnie...

Second visit
We are here for 2 days. We're from Melbourne Australia. This is the second time we've visited. The first time was 35 years ago for our honeymoon.
We have had dinner overlooking the water, lunch on the quay, visited Te Papa and now this museum. We took the bus to the city and rode up the cable car and walked down through the beautiful gardens. We love Wellington!

Wellington demands love
To Wellington
returning to Wellington
home, or
after some time
her hair is different and
she has a tattoo curling
up one of her arms
it takes a few days
to remember how
to love her,
the blue hills,
the velvet sea and
the wind, playful and
ferocious
Wellington demands love
with its wind
like a border collie
leaping, enthusiastic
boundless until finally
you laugh with the wind.

Such an awesome feeling
Dear Welly,
It was 15th of March '14 when I flew to your beautiful and amazing place! No words can describe the feelings that I have when felt when I landed to the ground. Such an awesome feeling.
Being here this day is a dream come true. It has been my dream to visit you since I was a child. So I did not thinking twice about going here even [though] it's a 22 hours flight. God bless your country always!!! From Abu Dhabi [with] love,
JK.

City with a soul
Dear Wellington
You rained for four months when I first arrived, pausing only to breathe before crying another bucketful.
Then, when it was me who was crying, you changed the backdrop to bright sunny days - fresh from the wash.
I took refuge in your night, when you stole the stars from the sky to decorate your tall buildings in a forest of christmas trees.
Under the street lamps I fed pigeons and listened to "Grenada."
I guess a city can have a soul, maybe made up from all the souls within it, because I never felt alone.

The city of wind, the city of romance
The city of wind, the city of romance and adventure. Of history, architecture and Lord of the Rings. I have never been to a city so far away from where I live that has felt so much like home. I have fallen in love with both a kiwi and his city.
Thanks Wellington
I'll be back

A town you can think in
Dear Wellington,
You were absolutely the right town for me when I left Taranaki as an 18 year old and came to live in your exciting, vibrant city - you embraced diversity. I found true friends and comrades we protested and worked and partied and felt part of the changes sweeping NZ in the 1970s. You can think in this town, you can find fellow travelers, you can love and eat and be entertain[ed] and work and dance and be nurtured by the creative land that is Whanganui-a-tara. THANKS xxxx

Our love is like
Dear Wellington,
Our love is like a surprise gust of wind, then a sudden downpour, and finally, elusive sunshine. It's been unexpected, and I know it won't last.

Amazing views
Wellington,
You have amazing views of the city both day & night from your Cable Car.
Your streets are filled with so many eye catching attractions that we can't see them all.
So much for so little time.
P.S. my girlfriend loves your shops :)

You pull me back
Dear Wellington,
We have an unstoppable bond. I try to move but you pull me back.
I say this is the last winter but it never is. I say I want a warmer summer but never leave.
I say I want something bigger but I never do.
You pull me back. I happily stay.

I'm totally yours Wellington
I am blessed to be a New Zealander with Ukrainian heritage. To call Wellington home is a privilege. I was totally yours from my first visit age 17 for the Shakespeare festival. Since then we've laughed, cried, danced and grown together. Stay true to your horizon line.

Hero of the day
I am a total stranger to the city. I'm insecure, curious and clumsy. But whenever I feel I need help I receive it generously from the people in Wellington. I'm about to have a collection of "hero of the day" stories during my 120 days staying here.
Thank you New Zealand for your kindness to me!
Love you!

More sunny days please!
Wellington,
Sometimes when it's been raining for weeks on end & there's a gale blowing I wonder what makes me stay here. But then the sun comes out & the wind stops & i fall in love with you all over again.
This is the city where I studied, got an amazing job, & made so many awesome friends.
You will forever be in my heart & I look forward to more of those sunny days!

I am home
Dear Wellington,
It's hard
When the wind is tugging
At my clothes
Hair
Anxieties
To remember how
I fell in love with you
But the sun comes out
Kindling my passions
Igniting my love
For you
And I know
I am home

Undeniable passion
The food, the music, the cafes/restaurants, the undeniable passion Wellingtonians share is simply amazing. Love this city. Just love it.

Saved by the coastguard
Dear Wellington,
You are a place of strange interjections that shake you right back into the present moment. Like this one time my friend took us out on his boat which he'd been promising for three years. Within ten minutes the engine had cut out and we were floating to our imminent demise until we realised we could just put an anchor down. Anyway when we were 84% sure were going to die we saw a seal. It was great. Then the coast guard came and it took us 3 minutes to get back to shore.
Love your work WGTN <3

Too much wind!
Hello!
I'm really enjoying Wellington. We came for the weekend to see the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular...
This is the second time I've come here and next time I probs shouldn't wear a dress (too much wind).

The energy of the sea
Dear Wellington,
You are a beautiful city.
It's a little but windy here but that's great because you feel the energy of the sea.
I love you and I'll visit you again!
Best wishes,
Jessi

Your moods are the constant
Dear Wellington
The winds howl,
the rain pelts down
every so often you let the sun shine.
Your moods are the constant.
You have me guessing
not only from day to day,
But from hour to hour
Your moods are the constant
A flirt in the gardens
A whirl on a golf course
Your moods are the constant
BBQs undercover
Outdoor furniture indoors
Your moods are our constant
In all of this....
I’ve tempered my expectations
By being spontaneous
Because your moods are the constant!
Loyally yours
A woolied-up (most of the time) admirer
