We’re asking visitors to write and leave love letters to Wellington in the Te Upoko o te Ika a Māui exhibition at the Museum of Wellington City & Sea. The exhibition features people's stories and passion about the greater Wellington region. One letter per day is selected to add to this blog. We welcome and encourage conversation and feedback to each letter.

Love for Wellington from the mainland.
I consider the mainland to be my home. But if you have to live in the North Island Wellington is the place. Energy, creativity, culture, food, sport, nature, city, arts. It's all here! Maybe locals need to enjoy it more!

Contrasting emotions
My mother left for what she said was her greatest adventure in April 2012 - her name is Mollie Martin - it cut me to my core...
I met Esther in 2013 - we are to be married...
The contrasting emotions confuse me to this day...

The "Murder House"
I remember visits to the "Murder House"from primary school in 1970s Karori. This was the dental clinic in what is now the PM's residence in Tinakori Road. A list of names would go up on the school noticeboard for who had to go that week. I would feel sick with terror if my name was up as I hated the drill. On Thursday lunchtimes a teal-coloured bus would arrive at the edge of the playground and those going climbed aboard. More fear and trembling. Oh the relief when it was finished and you could enjoy the trip home!

A message for Dad
My father left us in 2009, and loved this museum. We have not heard from or seen him since. I visit this place every day on my lunch break in the hope that one day I will see him.
We love you dad, wherever you are please come home. If you aren't there I hope you read this from a better place.

The old Cable Car
1970s. The old cable car was fun to ride. You could sit on curved, single, wooden seats on the outside and kick the tunnel walls. They were the most popular seats because you could jump on and off them easily.

Wellington is Always Windy!
I am a 13 year old and I have come to visit Wellington for the week. I love how Wellington is always windy whenever we come. Once it was so windy that when we hopped out of our car and held onto a pole our feet came off the ground.

WWOOFER
I learned about NZ as a WWOOFER. My first visit was 17 years ago. Every couple of years I come back and visit my WWOOF-friends-kiwis. Now it's my 5th time in NZ and I enjoy every minute. Every time they make it lovely and welcoming for me. The kiwis are special :) and I will come back in a couple of years. Sure, they are my friends...

Only Good Memories
First time in Wellington for about ten years. Epic, fun journey down from Hamilton with my daughter and grandgirls. Arrived to stay with my grandson and his partner for a week. Wow! When I lived here 33 years ago it was only bad memories. Now it's only good. Zoo, shopping, drink, dessert, buses, train, sea, coast, Victoria lookout, walks, museums, markets, ferry, weta cave, fun. WOW! Be Back. Thanks Wellywood.

Two Cultures Become One
My name is Te Ataahia and my first language was Maori. I was born in the Wairarapa and moved with my family to Petone in the Hutt in 2001. Attending high school in Wellington was my first experience in an English education environment, followed by a year studying in Costa Rica. I consider Island Bay home as that's where I moved to as a tertiary student and an adult. It is also where I met my Italian husband who was living and working there on a work holiday visa. We now enjoy a happy life living between two countries; NZ & Italy, sharing our stories, languages, food, culture and company.

Picnic at Mt. Vic
Today I had a picnic with my family at the top of Mt. Victoria in the back of our van. It made me happy because it reminded me of when my husband and I used to have picnics in the back of my 1977 Toyota when we were dating.

Saying Funny Things
Hi! I am Laila and an exchange student from Germany. In my six months here in NZ I said a lot of funny things :D for example when I finished my library book I said to my host sister: sorry I have to go to the library cause my book is empty! I said also to her if she would wear her hair open for the party instead of asking if she wearing her hair down! That happens when you translate wrong from German into English!

My Dad is a diplomat and I have lived all around and I have been to lots of schools and I am different and I do not care. Because I am who I am and no one can change that. I am Freya Green and that was me.

Self Reflection
I came here to attend a conference. I fell in love with this city and the people. The tranquility and slow pace of the place allowed me to rest my mind and do a lot of self reflection. I was born in Malaysia and stayed in Australia mainly after 17 years of age. I am married with 2 young children. It has been a real blessing to have a good life.
