We’re asking visitors to write and leave love letters to Wellington in the Te Upoko o te Ika a Māui exhibition at the Museum of Wellington City & Sea. The exhibition features people's stories and passion about the greater Wellington region. One letter per day is selected to add to this blog. We welcome and encourage conversation and feedback to each letter.

Escape Into The City
I'm the sort of person who loves an adventure and every time I go to the city it always offers new opportunities. Being from Lower Hutt, it's always nice to escape for a sunny day in the weekend and have lunch and enjoy the diverse range of people.

Dealing With The Wet
Today is a typical day in our beloved Wellington! It's wet, windy and chilly this winter afternoon! But we just take the bus, get used to wet trouser cuffs and get on with it! We love Wellington, weather and all.

Grandma and the Science Project
My story begins on a wet winters morning. It was wet. Must be the rain.
Grandma had woken me up to finish my science project. It was due that day and it wasn't finished. "What's that? It's a kereru. It must have caught in the storm. That's why it's got a cough." Thought Billy. "We'd better give it some cough syrup" said grandma. She could read minds and finish science projects. The science project got finished and then he got a gold star.

Once A Picture
I'm visiting this beautiful place from Phoenix, Arizona. Just last month at home I heard the tales from a gentleman returning to NZ to be knighted. We were at Dr. Bruce's office in the U.S. It was wild. Now I am here with my eyes viewing what was once a picture and in another hemisphere across the equator and timeline.

Faith In Humanity
Hi - I'm an American backpacker who has fallen in love with everything Wellington (or, more broadly, everything Kiwi). What an extraordinary city of hidden adventures... Christmas hikes, conversations and coffee. Moreover, the generosity I have experienced here is igniting my faith in humanity. Mary, Ridgewood, NJ.

Wellington 7s
The Wellington 7's has been the meeting point of so many friends traveling from all over the world. We have traveled from Scotland, Australia and South Island, NZ. Who wouldn't travel this far to spend 3 nights in a campervan after a wet and windy but spectacular Wellington 7's! The memories have been made!
This is story refers to the 'Wellington 7s', a rugby tournament that is hosted by Wellington at the Westpac Stadium in February every year.

Life Is Good
My name is Peter and I am from Western Australia. I'm here with my parents (My mum's an NZer) and my sister + her husband. We came to visit relatives + unveil a plaque for the graves of my grandparents in Thames. I am also here to visit/stay with my daughter Simone + her husband Ben who have recently relocated here from Melbourne. I am excited because she is about to have her 1st child (a girl) and my 7th grandchild. They are very happy here and I am happy for them. I am pleased to be able to return here to revisit my own family heritage, and my own direct family. Life is good! Such a special place to visit for so many important reasons.

Don't Get Complacent
I moved here from Canada 6 years ago for an adventure. "It will be fun" we thought," if we don't do it now, we never will." So, we did. Every day I remind myself not to get complacent about the beauty of this country - the views of Pauatahanui inlet, the pohutakawa trees, the changing face of the sea.

Absolutely, positively smitten
Wellington, we flirted awhile back, but it wasn't our time.
Now, I can feel what was supposed to be a short-term relationship threatening to lay down roots for good. Maybe I'll change my mind when the weather turns, but for now, your vibrancy and magic seem contagious, and the impossible starts to unfold.
You are beautiful and glorious in ways that other places can't compete with. I shed my JAFA clothes; I'm absolutely, positively smitten.

Wellington's difference
[I love Wellington because of its difference. Because we always get bad weather when no one else does. But I love Wellington most of all because it's my home.]

This city is a memory
Dear Wellington,
Born here in St. Helens, daughter of two former Victoria University students who met here in their first year of study at the Central Baptist Youth Hostel on Boulcott. I know I am home here, every time I come down the gorge and the harbour rises up into view. Now I work in the Majestic Centre, overlooking the carpark which replaced the old youth hostel. I look down and see the moment my parents met for the first time. This city is a memory.

Wandering Scouser
I never expected to be seduced by Windy Welly, but I absolutely love this city. It is a truly beautiful place to be. For now I will call Wellington my home before I continue my adventure around this amazing land.
Thank you for adopting this wandering Scouser! This is a place I will remember all my life.

Let me firstly say...
Let me firstly say I love you Wellington.
I love the smell of your freshly mowed lawn and the rain pelting against my roof at night. I love the cold autumn mornings playing soccer on your muddy lawns. And I love the way the wind blows my hair it's like a breath of fresh air!

"I'll be back!"
Kia ora,
Thomas Bissett is my name. From the UK and currently working in Auckland. I'm down in Wellington for a chilled out weekend away and have fallen in love with the city. The views from Mt Vic summit are just something else, and with the endless good vibes [emanating] from the cafes and bars, I now see why Aucklanders rave about Wellington. Had a great time, and in the words of Arnie...
"I'll be back!"
